Visit Gleneagles Golf Courses, Scotland
From: Golf-Online-TipsIf you enjoy Scotland golf vacations but have only visited St. Andrews, let me tell you about another equally famous golf course - Gleneagles.
Gleneagles is situated in stunning rolling hills just south of the Highlands between Stirling and Perth. It is only a one hour drive north of Edinburgh and Glasgow so it is easily accessible even as a day trip from either city. You could stay at the Gleneagles Hotel to take advantage of playing on some of the World's finest golf courses; Gleneagles has three Championship course.
The Courses
James Braid, 5 times Open Champion between 1901 and 1910, was hired to design two courses by Donald Matheson, who had the vision of building a magnificent golf resort featuring a World class hotel and World class golf courses.
His two creations are the famous King's course and Queen's course. Unlike Scotland's other famous championship courses; St. Andrews, Muirfield and Troon which are links courses, Gleneagles is inland yet still has the links feel as the courses were built on sand and gravel - they were deposited there by the last ice age. This created a landscape of hollows, ridges and flat topped mounds which so impressed Donald Matheson for the setting of the Gleneagles golf courses.
In 1928, another course was built, called The Wee Course because of its 9 holes. This was lengthened to 18 holes in 1974 and renamed Prince's. In 1980, another 18 hole golf course was built called Glendevon, but it wasn't long before there was more changes. Jack Nicklaus created the Monarch's Course in the early 1990's using the 18 holes of the Glendevon and part of the Prince's. The remaining holes of the Prince's were made into a 9 hole course, to recall the original Wee Course.
So, today Gleneagles has the King's, Queen's, Wee Course, and in 2001, the Monarch's course was renamed The PGA Centenary Course and will be the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
The King's Course
The King's was opened in 1918 and is one of the most picturesque and challenging golf courses in the World. It will test amateurs and professionals alike with swirling winds across the elevated greens, severely sloped greens, and deep bunkers. The approach shots to the greens is what will make you or break you, as it is difficult to select the right club - you have to judge the elevation to the green and then take into account the wind that sweeps the greens but can't be felt on the fairways.
The biggest distraction for any golfer is a pleasant one; the incredible views of the rugged Highlands to the north, the rolling green hills to the south, and the peaks of the Trossachs to the west.
The Queen's Course
The Queen's is set in beautiful woodlands between high ridges and with moorland characteristics. The course features many lochans (small lakes) and water ditches, fairways that slope towards the trees, interesting bunker locations, and some tiny greens. Famous golfers like, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, and Greg Norman have all been tested here.
The PGA Centenary Course
The Centenary course is one of Jack Nicklaus's masterpieces. Jack described the course as, "The finest parcel of land in the world I have ever been given to work with". He was of course referring to the magnificent setting with which he had to work his magic. A special feuture of the course is the 5 different tee locations on each hole which provides a course of anywhere between 5072 yards up to 6558 yards.
