Golf Tips for Beginners - Basics I

    From: Golf-Online-Tips

Golf has increased greatly in popularity over the past fifty odd years. We have witnessed great champions like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods. Plus world-renowned golf courses like Augusta National and Pinehurst.

What is it about golf that makes it so popular? It's the opportunity to be outside, to get some exercise (if you walk the course), be with friends or business colleagues at an unhurried pace, and to play a game that can never be perfected!

Don't worry about perfection; just aim to gradually improve your game and have fun. Over time, your scorecard will show your improvement, which will keep you playing time and again.

Here is the first of some very basic lessons in golf for the person who has no clue about the great game of golf. A highly recommended resource is the Golf Beginner Guide; it is 272 pages of pure information that walks you through everything you will ever need to know about golf. It covers from the basics to the advanced tips and techniques.

Golf Beginner GuideGolf is played on an 18-hole course; each hole has its "par", which is the number of your total shots: tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short hits as you approach the green), and putts.

The par value is based on the length and difficulty of each hole. Pars range from 3 to 5. If it takes you 5-shots to get the ball in the hole on a par 5 hole, you "made par." If it takes 6 shots, it's called a "bogie" or 1-over par, and if you made it in 4, it's a "birdie" or 1-under par.

Golf courses usually have "hazards" of some sort on most of the holes. Bodies of water, sand traps / bunkers, and trees are intentionally placed to make the hole trickier. The beginning golfer should try to find courses to play that are easier, with fewer hazards.

Each golfer keeps their own score, marking the number of total shots for each hole. At the end of the round, each person adds their scores up; the lowest number is the winner.

It is important for beginner golfers to not take themselves too seriously or get frustrated. It takes a long time to become competent at this game; even though the professionals make it look so easy at times.

Take a golf lesson or two at the beginning; it will help you develop a proper swing and help you get off to the right start.

Remember that it's just a game (to some.) Have fun and look at the big picture - you're outside, you're not at work - you're golfing!
