Golf Tips For Beginners - Basics VII
From: Golf-Online-TipsPutting
Vijay Singh once said: "You've got to hit the fairway... but at the same time, you've got to putt well. The guy that putts well is going to win the golf tournament."
The tour pros of golf can drive a ball from here to infinity, but it all comes down to how many strokes it takes to put the ball in the hole. Some players can hit every fairway and every green, but when their putting is off, they will never win a tournament.
Choosing a good putter is important, but using any old putter that you have consistently is more so. I used the same putter from the age of 10 until I was 25; I knew what it felt like in my hands, I knew its weight and how that plays into my putts.
Putting takes lots of practice and something else - "feel." Normally, we drive the ball 18 times in a round of golf, but putt at least twice that number. Doesn't it stand to reason that we should practice our putting at least twice as much as driving? If you can't get to the practice green frequently, practice on your carpet at home.
For more accuracy you will need to control the putter. One method that can help you do this is to grip the putter so that both of your thumbs are placed together on the top of the grip and your index fingers are extending down either side of the grip. This can help improve your accuracy by being able to guide your putter smoothly.
When you take up your stance, you should be positioned directly over the ball. Set the putter square to the target and have the ball positioned right in the middle of the club face.
Keep your body free of tension and your body stock still. When you swing the putter, you should do so in a pendulum-like motion by using your shoulders not your hips.
Follow through with your putt and accelerate through the ball. Your follow through should be about the same distance as your pull back motion. Finally, you need to keep your eyes on the ball at all times.
If you can position your approach shot accurately, try to position the ball below the hole. You don't want to be above the hole as a downhill putt is much more complicated because of gravity. On the other hand, when you putt uphill, you can gain more control of your stroke.
Good putting is essential to a good round of golf. Learn from each putt and remember to practice, practice, practice!
