Putting Tips
From: Golf-Online-TipsWhen it comes down to it, the majority of the game of golf is putting. Imagine if you three putted on every hole - just there, you are looking at 54 strokes!
It looks relatively easy; you just have to roll that little golf ball into the hole; but mastering the skill of putting is not so easy. Why? Because, apart from technique, it involves a more subjective element - feel.
Here are a few tips to help improve your putting stroke:
* When you practice your putting, use just one ball because this is closer to what a real game of golf is like. You are inclined to concentrate better this way than if you have a bucket of balls to keep digging into.
* Unlike with other clubs, putting isn't about the wrists. When you're putting, the palms of your hands face each other which prevents one hand from dominating and ensures that both work together for you.
* Make sure you're totally relaxed before you strike the ball. Loosen up your muscles so they feel flaccid and loose; never tense up your muscles when putting.
* Make your back and follow through strokes the same length.
* Keep your putter face square by weakening your left hand and strengthening your right - but keep that left wrist firm.
* Putting relies less on your wrists and more on your shoulder.
* Relax your knees a little - don't lock them up.
* Your feet should be shoulder width apart.
* On curved putts, keep your feel parallel to the line you've chosen, not parallel to the hole.
* As you make contact with the ball, you want to maintain the speed of the putter by keeping the putter grip moving towards the target.
* When putting downhill, it's better to miss a putt by sending it slightly beyond the hole than by having it come up short. That way you will not be faced with another downhill putt.
* When putting uphill, remember to give the ball a good chance of reaching the hole. You can afford to be a bit more aggressive with uphill putts, just don't leave the ball way above the hole.
* Practice your putting at home on your carpet when the weather is bad or you can't get to the golf course.
* Find a putter that works well for you and stay with it.
Putting, like I said, is about "feel"; you have to get a "feel" for the speed of the greens. Also, reading the break on the greens is not exactly difficult in theory, but in practice, it takes experience to get the "feel" for how much the ball will break.
Remember, like any part of the golf game, you must practice, practice, and then practice some more.
